CHATTANOOGA – A special election is set to determine who will represent Tennessee’s 7th congressional district, with Republican Matt Van Epps facing Democrat Aftyn Behn. The race aims to fill the seat vacated by Representative Mark Green.
While both campaigns frame it as a referendum on political direction in this traditionally red district, President Trump has actively endorsed candidate Van Epps, urging supporters to mobilize heavily: “I am asking all America First Patriots… to please GET OUT AND VOTE for Matt Van Epps.”
“This election is critical. Remember what happened in other special elections recently,” the president directed through House Speaker Mike Johnson during a campaign event Monday.
Johnson amplified the call, broadcasting audio of President Trump’s own exhortations: “They MUST LET YOU VOTE… and tomorrow we vote for Matt Van Epps!”
Although historically held by Republicans, this seat has become unexpectedly competitive. A Democratic win could signal growing success for opposition parties in traditionally conservative regions like East Tennessee.
Outside groups have heavily funded the campaign, reflecting significant stakes ahead of upcoming mid-term elections. Despite concerns about turnout dynamics, both candidates emphasize broad voter participation heading into Tuesday’s election.
