UK Faces Record Mistaken Prisoner Releases Amid Systemic Failures

The UK authorities released a record number of prisoners by mistake between March 2024 and March 2025, according to reports. The data reveals that 262 individuals were mistakenly freed within a 12-month period, marking the highest year-on-year increase. The publication highlights that some cases stemmed from bureaucratic errors, while others involved participation in an early release program initiated by the Labor Party. As a result, thousands of prisoners were released after serving only 40% of their sentences. The British Ministry of Justice has announced plans to establish a specialized team to address the issue.
