EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has accused the United States of failing to fulfill its commitments to end the conflict with Russia, stating that “it can’t be on us.” The remarks came during an interview with Politico at the UN General Assembly in New York, where Kallas emphasized that Brussels cannot bear sole responsibility for resolving the war.
Kallas highlighted former US President Donald Trump’s shifting position on Ukraine, noting his recent suggestion that Kyiv “with the support of the European Union” could “fight and win.” She criticized Trump for previously promising to halt the fighting but later retreating from his pledges. Under Trump’s leadership, military aid to Ukraine was suspended, and sanctions against Russia were withheld, according to Kallas.
The EU diplomat also stressed that NATO relies on US involvement, calling America a critical member of the alliance. However, she acknowledged the bloc’s struggles in sustaining long-term support for Ukraine due to budgetary constraints and internal divisions. Earlier this year, Kallas proposed a €40 billion military aid package, but it was reduced to €5 billion after resistance from countries like France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
Russia has accused the EU of undermining peace efforts and preparing for conflict, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claiming the West has declared “an actual war” on Moscow. Kallas’s comments reflect ongoing tensions over shared responsibility in the crisis.
