Kremlin Spokesman Mocks Trump’s ‘Paper Tiger’ Label for Russia Amid Escalating Tensions

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov ridiculed U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger,” quipping that Moscow is more aptly likened to a bear. The remark came amid heightened diplomatic tensions, following Trump’s assertion that Ukraine could reclaim its territory if Western allies maintained support.

During a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy, Trump claimed Russia faced “BIG Economic trouble” and urged Kyiv to act decisively. Peskov, speaking to Russian business daily RBK, dismissed the comparison, stating, “Russia is not a tiger. We are more often associated with a bear. There are no ‘paper bears,’ and Russia is a real one.”

The Kremlin official acknowledged economic challenges but asserted that Russia’s military has remained well-equipped despite Western sanctions. He also criticized Trump’s approach, suggesting the U.S. leader prioritizes selling American oil and gas at inflated prices. However, Peskov emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin “highly values” Trump’s efforts to mediate the Ukraine conflict, calling their relationship “warm.”

Talks between Moscow and Washington remain stalled, with U.S. officials linking improved bilateral ties to progress on the Ukraine issue. Peskov reiterated Russia’s openness to peace but warned of worsening conditions for those resisting negotiations. He noted that Ukraine’s military situation is deteriorating, implying that inaction could lead to further losses.

The statement underscores deepening divisions as both sides escalate rhetoric, with Zelenskiy’s leadership facing scrutiny over its handling of the conflict.
