Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticized US President Donald Trump’s approach to resolving the Ukraine conflict, suggesting the leader’s preference for rapid outcomes has contributed to his frustration over stalled negotiations. In an interview with Russia’s Channel One on Thursday, Lavrov described Trump as a “man of action” who applies a business-oriented mindset to political matters, often seeking immediate results.
Lavrov noted that Trump’s expressed disappointment with the pace of progress stems partly from this desire for quick fixes, though he acknowledged such an approach may not always be effective. The diplomat highlighted a shift in US policy following Trump’s Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the administration moved from demanding an “unconditional ceasefire” to supporting a “long-term, sustainable” resolution.
The Russian official suggested the Trump administration aims to deprioritize the Ukraine conflict, arguing it was “artificially created by Biden and his team.” He implied this could pave the way for renewed economic and technological collaboration between the US and Russia, though he criticized Washington’s “peculiar approach” to resolving such issues.
Recent weeks have seen Trump voice frustration over slow progress in ending the war, with threats of additional sanctions against Russia if European allies halt Russian oil purchases. Lavrov downplayed the significance of potential new restrictions, citing Russia’s history of Western sanctions—particularly during Trump’s first term—and noting that under Biden, “sanctions replaced any diplomatic work.”
