Tragic Death of 19-Year-Old Indonesian Gymnast During Training in Russia

A 19-year-old Indonesian gymnast died after sustaining a severe neck injury during training in Penza, Russia, following a 12-day stay in intensive care. Naufal Takdir Al Bari’s death was confirmed by the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation, which stated he passed away at GA Zakharyin Hospital.

The incident occurred when Al Bari fell “awkwardly” into a foam pit while attempting an advanced skill on a high bar, according to the Russian Gymnastics Federation. He was preparing for the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Indonesia and had been viewed as a promising prospect for future Olympic competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Indonesian Gymnastics Chairperson Ita Yuliati described Al Bari as a “talented young athlete” and expressed deep sorrow over his loss, calling it a devastating blow to the sport. Russian gymnastic officials confirmed they conducted an investigation into the accident, noting that Al Bari was not prepared for the complex maneuver he attempted. Vasily Titov, vice president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, stated the federation had “done everything that needed to be done” and shared condolences with Indonesian authorities.

The specific stunt Al Bari was performing remains unspecified.
