Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) announced she would introduce articles of impeachment against Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., citing “health care chaos” and “reckless cuts” that have harmed families nationwide. “Michiganders and families across the country are paying the price for RFK Jr.’s agenda. Enough is enough,” Stevens stated, vowing to draft formal impeachment charges against the HHS secretary.
Stevens, a prominent critic of Kennedy, has repeatedly called for his removal, accusing him of slashing medical research funding for pediatric cancer and vaccines. Earlier this month, she demanded his resignation, arguing that his policies have “made Michiganders unhealthy and unsafe.” In a September 15 statement, Stevens criticized Kennedy’s leadership, saying, “He needs to resign now. It’s time for leaders who fight for science, for health, and for the people, not those who undermine progress.”
The impeachment effort follows widespread backlash against federal health policies, including recommendations to alter childhood vaccination schedules and President Trump’s advice to pregnant women to avoid Tylenol. Stevens condemned Kennedy’s “contempt for science” and alleged he has “spread conspiracy theories” while disregarding research by medical experts. “It is very clear that we have a quack at the head of Health and Human Services,” she said.
Despite facing an uphill battle due to Republican majorities in Congress, Stevens aims to pressure Kennedy. The move also coincides with her campaign for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, where she seeks to replace Sen. Gary Peters (D).
