Uber Technologies revealed plans to test drone-based food delivery services in partnership with Flytrex, an autonomous drone logistics company. The initiative, described as a “major step forward in the future of autonomous logistics,” will initially target Uber Eats pilot markets in the U.S. by year’s end.
The collaboration integrates Flytrex’s FAA-approved drone system with Uber’s delivery infrastructure, aiming to enhance speed and efficiency. Flytrex has already completed over 200,000 deliveries, according to Uber, while the company emphasized its commitment to expanding multimodal options, including cars, bikes, robots, and helicopters.
Uber’s investment in Flytrex marks its first foray into drone technology, with executives highlighting the potential of autonomous systems to revolutionize delivery networks. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s President of Autonomous Mobility and Delivery, stated the partnership would “reshape how food and essentials move through cities.” Noam Bardin, Flytrex’s Executive Chairman, called drones “the future of food delivery,” citing their speed and sustainability.
Other companies, including DoorDash and Chipotle, are also exploring drone delivery in select regions like Dallas-Fort Worth. Uber previously tested sidewalk robots for food deliveries in Los Angeles earlier this year.
