President Trump has declared saving Utah’s Great Salt Lake a top priority, vowing immediate action in collaboration with Governor Spencer Cox. In a recent statement on Truth Social, Trump emphasized: “Very important to save The Great Salt Lake in Utah. This is an Environmental hazard that must be worked on, IMMEDIATELY — It is of tremendous interest to me.”
During remarks at the National Governors Association dinner, Trump reiterated his commitment: “We’re going to save the Great Salt Lake.” He also noted Governor Cox’s concerns about water loss, quoting Cox as stating: “We’re losing water rapidly, and it’s getting smaller, smaller, drier, drier.”
Governor Cox attended the White House meeting this week as part of the National Governors Association event and has been working with the Utah state legislature on conservation measures. The governor’s office reported that Cox has had multiple opportunities to discuss the lake’s preservation with President Trump.
In a video message, Cox described the Great Salt Lake as “part of the soul of Utah,” highlighting agricultural optimization projects and a $200 million private capital infusion aimed at long-term recovery. He stated: “We will not let the lake fail. Period.” Cox further emphasized that efforts to save the lake require ongoing collaboration across all sectors and will continue for “100 years.”
