Trump Files $10 Billion Lawsuit Against BBC Over Alleged Defamation of Jan 6 Speech

President Trump has officially filed a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation for $10 billion, alleging defamation following the BBC’s editing of his January 6, 2021, speech. The action targets the broadcaster’s “Panorama” documentary, which the president claims intentionally manipulated footage to falsely associate him with the U.S. Capitol riot.

The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Florida Federal Court, seeks $5 billion under Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act alongside $5 billion for defamation. Trump’s legal team stated the BBC “intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctor[ed] his speech” to interfere with the 2024 presidential election. They further accused the broadcaster of a “long pattern of deceiving its audience in coverage of President Trump,” serving what they described as “a leftist political agenda.”

The BBC apologized to Trump on November 13, promising not to re-air the documentary but refusing any compensation. In its statement, the broadcaster asserted it “strongly disagree[s] there is a basis for a defamation claim” despite acknowledging the video’s editing was regrettable.

Trump had previously threatened legal action unless the BBC issued an apology and provided restitution. The lawsuit marks his latest effort to hold the broadcaster accountable for what he characterizes as journalistic misconduct in coverage of his remarks ahead of the Capitol riot.
