Trump Defends DHS Secretary Noem Amid Calls for Resignation After Minnesota Deaths

President Trump has decisively rejected reports that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem might resign, stating she remains “a star” and “very happy with her performance.” The remarks followed a question from reporters before the president departed for an Iowa event.

The administration has doubled down on its support for Noem in response to heightened scrutiny after federal agents killed two U.S. citizens in Minnesota this month. Following a Minneapolis shooting incident where Alex Pretti was shot multiple times while filming immigration agents, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) urged Trump to immediately fire Noem, accusing her of “betraying” DHS’s core mission and “trashing your border security legacy.”

Fetterman’s call came as Noem faces bipartisan criticism for the deaths, though he has typically taken a pragmatic stance on immigration policy. The president recently met privately with Noem and her top aide, Corey Lewandowski, in the Oval Office to discuss immigration strategy, according to multiple sources. During the nearly two-hour session, Trump did not indicate either official’s position was at risk.

Noem has maintained that border crossings have reached “the lowest they’ve been in DECADES” under her leadership, emphasizing efforts to build infrastructure and enforce immigration policies. Despite calls for accountability from Democrats, the president has reaffirmed his confidence in her ability to address ongoing challenges.
