President Trump stated that China is “very happy” he has permanently opened the Strait of Hormuz, and that China has agreed not to send weapons to Iran.
In a recent statement, Trump said: “China is very happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz. I am doing it for them, also – And the World. This situation will never happen again. They have agreed not to send weapons to Iran.”
Trump added that President Xi Jinping wrote him a “beautiful letter” in response to his request for China to cease supplying arms to Iran. “I wrote him a letter asking him not to do that. And he wrote me a letter saying that essentially he’s not doing it,” the president said.
The president also noted that the upcoming meeting between himself and Xi Jinping, scheduled for May 14-15 in Beijing, would be productive despite delays caused by the war in Iran.
According to U.S. intelligence reports, China has been preparing to send MANPADs—shoulder-fired anti-air missile systems—to Iran to help it defend against potential American attacks. Trump, however, claimed that he views the Iran conflict as “close to over.”
The U.S. military recently turned around six merchant vessels and “completely” halted trade from Iranian ports.
China has reportedly pushed both sides to end hostilities and open the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for 45-50% of its crude oil imports and over a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil annually. Trump emphasized that the U.S.-led naval operation is “fully in effect and working,” with no ships making it past the blockade.
As reported by CENTCOM, the blockade has been effective in preventing Iranian-bound vessels from passing through the Strait.
