New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has endorsed Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor, citing shared commitments on safety, affordability, and opposition to former President Donald Trump’s policies. In a New York Times op-ed, Hochul highlighted conversations with Mamdani about policing, combating antisemitism, and economic challenges, emphasizing that his agenda aligns with her vision for the city. She stressed that Mamdani would not “surrender one inch to Donald Trump,” framing the race as a battle against what she described as his extreme influence.
Hochul acknowledged differences with Mamdani but praised his leadership, stating, “I heard a leader who is focused on making New York City affordable.” Her endorsement followed months of pressure from progressive Democrats and Trump’s public involvement in the mayoral race. Meanwhile, Trump condemned Hochul’s support for Mamdani, labeling him a “Liddle Communist” and questioning the decision as detrimental to New York City.
The governor’s backing could shape Mamdani’s policy priorities, as some initiatives require legislative approval. Despite tensions, Hochul clarified she does not endorse all of Mamdani’s goals. Trump, however, predicted Mamdani’s victory, calling it a “rebellion” against his political influence. The race remains contentious, with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo trailing Mamdani in polls.
