Trump Condemns California Redistricting as “Unconstitutional” and “Giant Scam”

President Donald Trump has labeled California’s ongoing redistricting process as “unconstitutional” and “a giant scam,” launching a direct challenge against Governor Gavin Newsom’s efforts to redraw congressional maps. The controversy centers on allegations that the proposed boundaries unfairly dilute Republican representation in the state.

California currently holds 52 U.S. House seats, with Democrats controlling 43 and Republicans holding nine. The redistricting plan targets five Republican representatives: Doug LaMalfa (District 1), Kevin Kiley (District 3), David Valadao (District 22), Ken Calvert (District 41), and Darrell Issa (District 48). Critics argue the maps would merge rural Republican constituencies with urban Democratic areas, weakening their political influence.

LaMalfa criticized the changes, stating, “How on earth does Modoc County on the Nevada and Oregon Border have any common interest with Marin County and the Golden Gate Bridge?” Kiley asserted he would win reelection despite the proposed shifts, vowing to oppose what he called Newsom’s “sham initiative.” Meanwhile, Congressman Ami Bera explored potential moves to retain representation in the Sacramento region amid the map revisions.

The dispute highlights escalating tensions over gerrymandering ahead of the 2026 elections, with Trump framing the process as part of a broader effort by “Texas Republicans” to manipulate congressional outcomes.
