A top national security adviser has just become the second key aide to step down from the Trump administration within a week. Deputy national security adviser Andy Baker, a close ally of Vice President JD Vance, is leaving the White House. This follows Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s recent resignation.

Mario Nawfal detailed Baker’s departure in an X post, stating he will depart the administration “in the coming weeks.” Previously serving as national security adviser to Vice President Vance and personally involved in Iran negotiations, Baker held a central role in shaping foreign policy behind the scenes for the past 18 months. Before his current deputy national security adviser position, Baker served as Vance’s national security advisor.

Baker is expected to join the private sector to work with former Trump national security adviser Robert O’Brien. A source close to Baker confirmed he stayed longer than planned to ensure an orderly transition but prioritized family time after leaving government service. Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson bid Baker farewell on social media ahead of his departure.
