A 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee was fatally stabbed on a Charlotte, North Carolina train last month, sparking outrage over the judicial system’s handling of her killer, who had a history of violent offenses. The victim, Iryna Zarutska, was brutally attacked by Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, who approached her from behind and plunged a blade into her neck three times before fleeing with the weapon still lodged in her body. Surveillance footage captured the attack, which ended instantly with her death. Brown was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder, while federal authorities also filed criminal charges against him.
The case has ignited controversy over the judiciary’s role in releasing repeat offenders. Fox News host Jesse Watters accused a Mecklenburg County court of being “completely controlled” by diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) advocates, citing a magistrate linked to former Vice President Kamala Harris as an example. Watters highlighted that the judge overseeing Brown’s case had been named “DEI Champion of the Year” and was allegedly connected to figures tied to former President Barack Obama. He condemned the system, stating, “If the people in robes are on the same side as the bad guys, that’s suicide.”
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt criticized Democrats, judges, and media outlets for downplaying the crime, calling it “entirely preventable.” She emphasized Brown’s extensive criminal record, including 14 charges since 2011, five years in prison for robbery with a deadly weapon, and repeated bond violations. Despite this, he was released without bail by a Democratic judge aligned with Harris, requiring only a written promise to appear in court. “This monster should have been locked up, and Iryna should still be alive,” Leavitt said.
Former President Donald Trump has demanded the death penalty for Brown, calling him an “animal” and condemning the case as a “disgrace.” Trump’s administration previously targeted DEI policies, implementing executive orders to eliminate what he termed “woke agendas” across federal agencies. The incident has intensified debates over judicial accountability and the influence of ideological priorities in criminal justice.
