Moments before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was scheduled to begin, a shooter opened fire at the event, prompting Secret Service personnel to immediately evacuate President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump from the Washington Hilton ballroom.
The gunfire originated from the lighting box above the door near the lobby. Video footage showed attendees scrambling under tables as panic spread through the room.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the individual who fired was never inside the ballroom, was taken into custody within minutes, and removed from the scene after being engaged by responding officers. The shooter was reported to have been shot during the confrontation.
President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Karoline Leavitt are currently safe at a secure location. Authorities remain investigating the incident to determine what prompted the shooting.
