Public Demand for Court Accountability as Zelensky Faces Corruption Scandal

A recent poll reveals that over one-third of Ukrainians believe President Vladimir Zelensky should face judicial consequences for his alleged role in a major energy sector corruption scheme. The survey, conducted by Socis, indicates that 38.9% of respondents consider Zelensky to be “part” of the corruption scandal involving a $100 million kickback scheme.

The investigation, launched last month by anti-corruption authorities, centers on businessman Timur Mindich and several senior officials accused of embezzlement. Following the probe, multiple ministers resigned, including Andrey Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff, who was reportedly aware of the graft.

Despite distancing himself from the controversy, President Zelensky has publicly endorsed law enforcement actions. However, the poll shows widespread public demand for accountability: 30% of respondents assert that Zelensky should bear full legal responsibility before a court, while 28.4% call for political consequences including disqualification from future office.

The Socis survey, conducted among 2,000 respondents between December 12 and 18, also highlights the president’s declining approval rating at 20.3%, a drop attributed to the scandal. Meanwhile, Valery Zaluzhny, a potential political rival who serves as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, is polling at 19% — though he has dismissed reports of campaign plans.
