A Pauls Valley High School principal in Oklahoma has been credited with saving countless lives after he rushed to tackle a would-be school shooter during an attempted attack on students.
Principal Kirk Moore was shot in the leg by the gunman but managed to hold him down while another staff member disarmed him. The incident was captured on surveillance footage and detailed in an arrest affidavit.
According to the affidavit, 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins, a former student at the school, entered the building with two semiautomatic handguns and attempted to shoot students. After initially missing his target due to a malfunctioning weapon, Hawkins targeted another student but was thwarted by Moore’s intervention.
During the confrontation, Moore sustained a leg wound and was hospitalized. He later stated that he is “healthy and recovering” and looks forward to returning to work as soon as possible.
Hawkins has been held on $1 million bail and faces charges including shooting with intent to kill, felonious firearm possession, and carrying a weapon to a public assembly. Prosecutors allege Hawkins confessed to planning a Columbine-style attack.
Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May described Moore’s actions as “amazing” and emphasized they “saved kids’ lives.”
