Former President Barack Obama sparked controversy following his statement on Sunday about the shooting that occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
In a post on X, Obama stated there was no known motive behind the attack and emphasized the importance of rejecting violence in democracy. He also expressed gratitude to U.S. Secret Service agents, noting the shooter’s colleague is expected to recover.
However, a manifesto authored by Cole Allen—the shooter—revealed his intent to target President Trump and members of his administration. Released online prior to Obama’s statement, the document described the administration as “a pedophile, rapist, and traitor” and specifically named high-ranking officials as targets.
Allen’s manifesto additionally criticized event security protocols, accusing authorities of systemic negligence that left attendees vulnerable. He stated his actions were a direct response to what he deemed the administration’s misconduct.
The shooter’s post has drawn criticism from conservative figures who argue Obama’s initial claim of an unknown motive ignored clear evidence of the attack’s purpose.
