New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has drawn sharp criticism from prominent Republicans after urging residents to set their thermostats at 78 degrees during a heat wave.
The mayor’s call for New Yorkers to adjust their home temperatures to the threshold sparked immediate ridicule across social media and from Republican figures.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) labeled the directive “an act of war against women in menopause” and added, “socialism has entered the chat.” Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley declared, “Welcome to socialism,” while Vivek Ramaswamy stated that “the right answer isn’t restrictions or mandates. It’s drilling, fracking, coal, & nuclear.”
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich described the policy as an “open admission of the failure of the left to provide enough inexpensive electricity.” Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt quipped, “Show us your thermostat, commie.”
Mamdani doubled down, insisting he was delighted to live life in the hot lane. The mayor personally set the Gracie Mansion thermostat to 78 degrees and urged residents to do the same. Despite facing widespread backlash on social media—including a user’s comment that read, “78 degrees??? Welcome to communism people! Hope you enjoy”—the mayor remained unfazed.
