Minneapolis Police Officers Consider Joining Border Patrol After Expressing Gratitude for Deportation Work

CBP Commander Gregory Bovino has invited Minneapolis police officers to join U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or the U.S. Border Patrol, stating that many rank-and-file officers have shown interest in transferring.

Bovino indicated he would be available to meet with those seeking to move to these agencies, following reports that some officers approached his team expressing gratitude for their work in deporting undocumented immigrants.

The invitation comes amid tensions between Minneapolis leadership and federal immigration enforcement. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara recently directed Somali immigrants to contact local police if ICE attempts arrests, a policy critics have highlighted as prioritizing certain immigrant groups over U.S. citizens.

Earlier this week, Mayor Jacob Frey urged officers to resist federal immigration agents, while Bovino has been active on city streets leading efforts to clear anti-ICE protests.

Many Minneapolis police officers have reported frustration with their leadership and have expressed a desire to assist in addressing undocumented immigration issues through federal channels.
