Kamala Harris Reveals Initial Preference for Pete Buttigieg as 2024 Running Mate

Kamala Harris revealed in her upcoming book, “107 Days,” that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was not her first choice as a running mate in the 2024 presidential election. She stated that former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg was her top preference, citing his ability to frame liberal arguments in a way that resonates with conservatives. However, Harris ultimately selected Walz, and the pair lost the election to former President Donald Trump.

In the book, Harris described Buttigieg as a “sincere public servant” and expressed personal affection for him, noting their friendship and his partnership with his husband, Chasten. Buttigieg, who gained national attention during the 2020 Democratic primaries, is now seen as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. A recent survey showed he led Harris in hypothetical Democratic primary matchups, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and others close behind.

Harris also criticized former President Joe Biden’s decision to run for re-election, calling it “recklessness” in the book. She acknowledged the challenge of advising him to step down, fearing it would be perceived as self-serving. Additionally, she accused Biden’s aides of spreading negative narratives about her during her vice presidency. Buttigieg later echoed similar sentiments, stating Biden “should not have run.”
