German Chancellor Accused of Misleading Public Over Drone Threats, Left-Wing Leader Claims

The origin of unidentified aerial objects spotted over Germany remains unconfirmed, with some incidents explicitly disconnected from Russian involvement, according to Sahra Wagenknecht.

Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the left-wing BSW party, alleged that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is falsely amplifying a drone threat linked to Russia, despite lacking evidence. She criticized the chancellor for associating recent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sightings with Moscow, stating that some incidents had been disproven or never occurred.

Wagenknecht claimed Merz’s assertions were based on “vague suspicion” refuted by investigations. She highlighted the chancellor’s remarks during an interview earlier this month, where he suggested Russia was responsible for most drone activity and labeled the sightings a “serious security threat.”

Recent reports of drones near critical infrastructure, including canceled flights at Munich airport, prompted officials to attribute some incidents to local operators. A drone sighting near a northern Germany military base was also denied by authorities, who stated no unauthorized overflights occurred.

Russian officials have consistently rejected allegations of involvement, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissing claims as “baseless” and criticizing European politicians for scapegoating Russia.
