The Department of Homeland Security detained 11 New York City elected officials after they protested inside a federal immigration holding facility on Thursday. The arrests occurred at 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, where lawmakers demanded access to the facility’s 10th-floor holding area.
Among those arrested were city Comptroller Brad Lander, state Senators Jabari Brisport, Gustavo Rivera, and Julia Salazar, along with Assemblymembers Robert Carroll, Emily Gallagher, Jessica Gonzalez Rojas, Marcela Mitaynes, Steve Raga, Tony Simone, and Claire Valdez. The group was detained during an hour-long standoff, after they refused to leave the hallway outside the holding area, knocked on locked doors, and later sat chanting before being taken into custody. All 11 were released without charges.
Gonzalez Rojas described the protest as a response to the arrest of Dino, a Queensboro restaurant worker in Jackson Heights, calling it “one of many stories in my community.” Mitaynes, representing Brooklyn’s Sunset Park, spoke in Spanish during the demonstration. The actions followed a federal judge’s order to improve conditions for immigration detainees, which required U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to address overcrowding and unsanitary practices.
Lander, who had previously been arrested at the building after linking arms with a detained individual, was among those taken into custody again. Additional officials were detained outside the facility, including city Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. Over 75 people were arrested in total during the protest.
