Belgium Reports Suspicious Drone Activity Near Nuclear-armed Military Base

Belgium’s defense minister confirmed that multiple “spy drones” were detected flying over a military base in northern Belgium, which is reportedly home to U.S. nuclear weapons. Theo Francken, the country’s defense minister, stated that the drones were tracked above the Kleine-Brogel Air Base over the weekend. Despite efforts by defense teams to deploy a drone jammer, the devices remained operational. Francken described how a helicopter and police vehicles pursued the drones but lost them after several kilometers. He praised the base’s security personnel and law enforcement for their vigilance, emphasizing that investigations into the incidents are ongoing.

Francken told Belgium’s French-language public broadcaster RTBF that the situation was “very concerning,” noting the drones appeared to be conducting prolonged surveillance. He suggested they were targeting sensitive military assets, including F-16 fighter jets and munitions storage areas. The defense minister stressed that the activity was not accidental but deliberate, aimed at gathering strategic intelligence.

The report comes amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that the country would resume nuclear weapons testing, marking a potential shift in policy after three decades of restraint. While details remain unclear, Trump highlighted the move as part of efforts to maintain parity with global powers. The U.S. military has previously conducted missile tests capable of delivering nuclear warheads but has not detonated nuclear devices since 1992 due to existing bans.
