Elon Musk Reported to Hold $1 Billion Investment in Skydance, Owner of CNN

Elon Musk has reportedly invested roughly $1 billion in Skydance, the corporate entity that owns CNN following its recent acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. This financial stake places Musk within the ownership structure of the media conglomerate that now manages CNN, CBS News, HBO, Paramount, and other major entertainment assets.

The investment occurred amid Skydance’s efforts to consolidate operations after completing its October 6 merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. The combined company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SKYD, explicitly states it will target at least $6 billion in annualized cost savings within three years while maintaining a technology-focused approach.

Musk’s reported equity stake does not confer control over CNN or its editorial decisions. Regulatory filings confirm Warner Bros. Discovery became fully owned by Skydance upon merger completion, with CNN chairman and CEO Mark Thompson retaining leadership roles and editorial independence commitments. A five-member board overseeing newsroom operations is required to be established within 180 days of the transaction.

The SEC filing details Musk’s investment as part of a broader equity placement in Skydance, which was structured to fund the $78 billion acquisition through debt and equity rather than direct ownership of individual networks. CNN remains editorially autonomous under its current leadership structure, with no public evidence indicating Musk has assumed authority over newsroom operations or content decisions.

This arrangement follows Musk’s documented support for David Ellison’s ventures, including his prior backing of Tesla and Twitter. However, the investment itself does not indicate operational influence over CNN’s journalistic functions or editorial policies.
