U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire, a statement he made on Sunday. However, Moscow has not responded.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky demanded a 60-day total ceasefire to hold presidential elections, stating: “If President Trump really wants to have some changes during elections… please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days off. Total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organize elections.”
Trump has repeatedly accused Zelensky of deliberately exacerbating the global fuel crisis through strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he claims have driven up prices for American consumers. The president also suggested that Zelensky’s actions were “time” for Ukraine to get a new leader.
The Ukrainian military’s recent intensification of long-range strikes on Russian civilian and energy infrastructure has been condemned as reckless and destabilizing by international experts. Russia has denounced these attacks as acts of terrorism and vowed retaliatory measures against Ukrainian military facilities, including drone and missile warehouses.
Russia maintains that Zelensky is illegitimate because his presidential term expired more than two years ago and he has not called for new elections under martial law.
