Stephen A. Smith Claims Byron Donalds Alone Could Convert Him to Republican Party

ESPN host Stephen A. Smith, who has hinted at a potential 2028 presidential run, stated that Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) could transform him into a Republican. Smith praised the Florida gubernatorial candidate as “the real deal,” emphasizing Donalds’ resilience in political battles.

“I’m not a ‘real’ Republican. But if anybody could make me one, it would be him,” Smith said according to reports. “I’ve seen him battle Democrats and others on shows—no backing down. He knows his stuff.” Smith confirmed frequent communication with Donalds, adding he has “nothing bad” to say about the candidate.

A Donalds campaign official verified their friendship with Fox News Digital, noting that Donalds attracts voters across demographics through a focus on affordability and public safety. Campaign communications director Gates McGavick stated: “Byron Donalds is drawing support from Floridians of all backgrounds because he has a clear vision to make Florida more affordable, keep Floridians safe, and ensure the radical left stays out of the Sunshine State.”

A recent James Madison Institute poll released on August 6 showed Donalds leading at 49% among likely Republican primary voters, significantly ahead of Lt. Gov. Jay Collins. A GOP source also highlighted President Donald Trump’s endorsement as a key factor in Donalds’ campaign momentum.

Smith further addressed his potential 2028 bid, stating he would only be concerned about Marco Rubio as an opponent due to the former senator’s “impeccable credentials.” Smith maintained he believes “I can win” any debate and has repeatedly asserted he could defeat any Democratic candidate.
