Hayden Panettiere Dies at 36: Celebrated Actress Honored Her Struggles and Global Impact

Actress Hayden Panettiere, whose roles in Heroes, Nashville, and the Scream franchise cemented her status as one of television’s most recognizable stars, has died at age 36.

Panettiere’s representative confirmed her passing to ABC News and Fox News Digital late Sunday, stating no cause of death or details about the circumstances were immediately available. The statement described Panettiere as “an incredible light who brought enormous love and joy” to those who knew her and millions of viewers worldwide.

The news came as a profound shock given Panettiere’s lifelong public presence. She began appearing in commercials before her first birthday, transitioned into daytime television as a child, and built a career spanning drama, comedy, voice acting, and film. For countless viewers, she remains iconic as Claire Bennet, the resilient cheerleader on NBC’s Heroes—a role that launched her into international stardom during the 2000s. She later starred as Juliette Barnes in ABC’s Nashville, a character defined by emotional depth and vulnerability that sustained the series for six seasons.

Panettiere also returned to the big screen as Kirby Reed in Scream VI, more than a decade after first portraying the role in Scream 4. Offscreen, she was unusually open about personal struggles, including alcoholism, postpartum depression, and recovery from trauma requiring seven blood transfusions during childbirth.

In a July Fox News Digital interview, Panettiere discussed her decision to let her daughter Kaya live with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko—a choice she made to avoid public custody conflicts after Kaya had resided with her father since 2018. She also described her journey through postpartum depression and addiction following that traumatic delivery.

Panettiere’s memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, released earlier this year, detailed themes of addiction, abuse, motherhood, grief, and healing. She had also been a vocal advocate for Ukraine, where her daughter once lived. During a 2022 interview with ABC News, Panettiere revealed she founded Hoplon International to provide protective gear and medical supplies to frontline personnel following Russia’s invasion.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter Kaya. She recently endured the loss of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, in 2023, an experience she described as profoundly transformative. At 36, Panettiere leaves behind a legacy defined by unforgettable roles and raw honesty about life beyond the spotlight—a testament to resilience that resonates across generations.
