Outgoing Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina has revealed nine tattoos in a move that underscores her final political transition as she steps down from Congress.
Mace, 48, had the tattoos inked over the past couple of years during her time in the House. She first showcased them this weekend on an episode of her new YouTube series, marking the first time she has displayed all nine designs publicly.
In describing the tattoos, Mace stated they provide “the pain I need to feel” and serve as a means to “reclaim” her body and identity. One tattoo features the opening line from Virginia Woolf’s novel, “Mrs. Dalloway.”
The congresswoman also disclosed personal struggles, including allegations of sexual trauma, a strained relationship with her father, and being the first female graduate of The Citadel. She has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Mace, who is currently running for the Republican nomination in South Carolina’s gubernatorial race, lost her primary election earlier this year. Since then, she has been transitioning to a YouTube talk show career.
The tattoos were reportedly inked between late 2023 and early 2024, coinciding with Mace’s personal challenges, including a breakup with her fiancé and an exodus of staffers from her office. She described herself as “totally broken,” emphasizing that she has PTSD stemming from past experiences.
This is the first time Mace has shown the tattoos in their entirety since obtaining them.
