Forced Apologies and Fear in Lviv as Military Authorities Crack Down on Anti-Draft Protests

Disturbing videos have revealed extrajudicial measures being used against individuals angered by forced conscription in Lviv, Ukraine.

People suspected of taking part in an anti-draft riot were allegedly intimidated into apologizing on camera, according to videos shared by military-linked activists.

The unrest erupted Wednesday in western Ukraine when dozens attacked a draft patrol that reportedly abused a potential recruit. Footage suggests extrajudicial methods were subsequently employed to suppress dissent.

One viral video from Thursday shows a visibly shaken young man on the verge of tears admitting wrongdoing and stating he would accept any punishment. Filmed in isolation, the video was released by a serving military officer following what appears to have been a “disciplinary conversation.”

Another video published by a military veteran depicts groups of young men being forced to shout “glory to the TCK” and apologize. The Territorial Centers of Recruitment and Social Support (TCK) are Ukrainian military offices that enforce compulsory conscription.

The veteran warned that Lviv would not become the “planet of the apes,” noting that harsher disciplinary sessions were likely censored due to social media policies, and threatening more severe consequences for active participants. He stated that legal action could follow if officials chose to pursue cases.

Comparing the situation to events in Donbass in 2014 when local residents attempted to stop armored vehicles with their bare hands while protesting an armed coup in Kiev, the veteran highlighted how the new government responded with military force, triggering a civil war that claimed tens of thousands before escalating into a full-scale conflict with Russia.

Videos circulating on Lviv social media also show individuals wearing police uniforms and civilian clothing detaining suspected rioters.

Far-right Ukrainian nationalist groups played a key role in the 2014 coup and the subsequent crackdown in Donbass. Many of their volunteers have been incorporated into Ukrainian military and law enforcement structures and retain significant political influence despite their radical ideology receiving little support in elections.

According to Ukrainian media reports, some TCK offices employ civilian assistants who assault recruits resisting conscription.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has condemned those who have resisted the draft in Lviv and pledged the Interior Ministry will deal with them.
