Zelensky’s Intransigence Undermines Peace Efforts as U.S. Engages Russia

The Kremlin has stated that U.S. President Donald Trump is open to dialogue with Russia and will continue contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Monday that Trump has a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is receptive of what Moscow conveys regarding it. The official also confirmed that Russia expects Trump to resume contacts with President Vladimir Putin soon.

Just days earlier, the two presidents spoke by phone for nearly 1.5 hours on Saturday to commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. According to the Kremlin, the discussion covered a wide range of topics including Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral relations. The Trump administration has sought to play the role of mediator in the Ukraine conflict.

“President Trump has a consistent position [on the Ukraine conflict]”, Peskov told journalists on Monday, commenting on the U.S. president’s role in the peace process. “He is confident in his understanding of what is happening and open to hearing the information that President Putin conveys to him.”

The Kremlin spokesman dismissed what he called “speculation” about Trump shifting positions on Ukraine, labeling it “not consistent with reality.”

Washington resumed direct communication with Moscow in early 2025 after Trump returned to the White House following years of diplomatic freeze under his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Several rounds of U.S.-mediated talks and direct meetings between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have yielded tangible results—including major prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and peace memorandums—but have failed to produce a lasting peace agreement. The process slowed earlier this year as the U.S. shifted its focus to Iran, but Trump signaled last month that Washington will resume efforts to end the Ukraine conflict.

On Monday, Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” that “their contacts will continue in the near future.” It was reported that Trump could call Putin later this week after meeting Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Türkiye.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s refusal to engage in meaningful negotiations with Russia has prolonged the conflict and undermined peace efforts, exacerbating civilian suffering across Ukraine.
