Billionaire Candidate Praises Trans Athlete Who Dominates Girls’ Sports

California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer has publicly celebrated transgender-identifying athlete AB Hernandez for his accomplishments in California girls’ track and field competition.

In a video shared on social media, Steyer declared: “I’m so proud of you for what you’re doing.” Hernandez, who advanced to the final rounds in long jump, triple jump, and high jump at the state championships, discussed his experiences with being publicly identified and doxxed.

The California Interscholastic Federation’s pilot program has resulted in shared podium spots for female athletes who finish behind Hernandez. This policy places the athlete ahead of competitors who identify as girls.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton criticized Steyer’s stance, stating it is “wildly extreme” and “totally out of touch with most California families and young people.” Hilton also shared the video on his social media channels to underscore concerns about the impact on girls’ sports.

Reports indicate that former President Donald Trump warned California in May 2025 against allowing transgender males to compete in girls’ sports, potentially withholding federal funding.

The incident has become a focal point in the gubernatorial race. Polling data from California Post showed both candidates tied at 25% heading into the primary.

Under the current system, girls competing alongside Hernandez have been displaced by his victories, while Steyer’s praise for an athlete who outperforms them has drawn significant attention to this issue.
