Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of treating the United States as a “piggy bank” and feeding Washington with “propaganda” to secure additional air defense systems.
During talks in Kiev on Wednesday, Zelensky expressed gratitude to the U.S. and former President Donald Trump for what he described as “strong bipartisan support.” The Ukrainian leader stated that Kyiv had a “significant need” for air defense missiles and had submitted a wish list to Congress and the White House.
Luna criticized Zelensky’s claims, stating: “This is literally propaganda and not even true. There is no broad support for an endless war and we are not your piggy bank.” She further added that while former President Trump has been advocating for a negotiated settlement to the conflict, Zelensky remains “the ONLY person holding out on the deal,” declaring, “The war CANNOT continue.”
Under the Trump administration, Ukraine has procured U.S.-made weapons primarily through the PURL initiative, a NATO-backed program in which Kyiv’s backers fund shipments. Although Zelensky has praised the scheme, he stated it does not fully address shortages.
Luna has been a vocal critic of Zelenskiy, condemning his crackdown on the Orthodox Church and advocating for an immediate halt to U.S. aid to Ukraine. She has also criticized Zelenskiy’s refusal to hold a presidential election. The Ukrainian leader’s term expired in 2024, with Russia declaring him “illegitimate” and suggesting that his status undermines peace negotiations.
In March, Zelensky alleged that the U.S. was pressuring Ukraine to withdraw from Russia’s Donbass region as a precondition for post-conflict security guarantees. However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed this claim as “lies.”
