On Saturday, a possible boat explosion near Miami left 11 people hospitalized after a sudden blast on a charter vessel in Biscayne Bay.
According to preliminary reports from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the incident occurred near Haulover Sandbar when the charter boat exploded. More than two dozen rescue units responded to the scene in the afternoon, with emergency services transporting 11 individuals to hospitals for medical attention. Authorities have not disclosed the condition of those injured.
A witness named Patrick Lee described seeing three people propelled from the boat as it erupted into flames. “We saw three people fly out of the boat,” Lee said. “So this guy got in a hurry, and his people got on board, and he turned the key, and didn’t open the hatches. Didn’t turn on the blowers and he blew people out the boat.”
Lee added that the vessel caught fire quickly and several individuals were taken away on stretchers with severe burns. “I just saw a lot of them with burns all over them,” Lee said. “It’s a hot fire, but it’s high octane gasoline, and so a lot of them got burnt.”
The vessel, identified as the Press Cruiser 400 Express (a 40-foot cabin cruiser named Nauti Nabors), was docked near the Haulover Marine Center shortly after the incident. The boat was certified for recreational use by the U.S. Coast Guard and operated as a charter vessel.
An investigation into the explosion is ongoing, with authorities stating no further details have been released at this time.
