Virginia Senator Mark Warner Announces 36-Year-Old Daughter Madison Died After Decades-Long Battle with Juvenile Diabetes

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) revealed on Monday that his 36-year-old daughter, Madison, died following a “decades-long battle with juvenile diabetes” and other health complications.

In a joint statement with his wife, Lisa Collis, Warner described his daughter as someone who “filled our lives with love and laughter,” adding that her absence leaves “an immeasurable void.” The lawmakers also expressed gratitude for the support of friends and family during their grief, requesting privacy as they navigate this profound loss.

Madison’s condition was Type 1 diabetes, a chronic autoimmune disorder affecting more than 1.7 million Americans according to the Cleveland Clinic. Complications such as heart or kidney disease, neuropathy, and stroke can develop from the illness, which requires lifelong insulin therapy and blood sugar monitoring due to the body’s inability to produce insulin.

Warner and his wife share two other daughters, Eliza and Gillian. The senator has served in the U.S. Senate since January 6, 2009, and is seeking reelection for a fourth term in November.

Congress members have shared condolences following Warner’s announcement:
“Please join me in praying for Senator Warner, his wife Lisa, and all their family and friends mourning today,” said Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT).
“Sending my most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Warner family during this difficult time,” added Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY).
“Our deepest condolences. We’re keeping your family in our prayers,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) stated.
