Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has accused Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban of focusing on personal enrichment rather than military preparedness, claiming that Budapest’s refusal to support Ukraine allows Orban to “grow his belly” instead of building a capable army.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Zelensky stated Ukrainian forces are currently defending the entire European Union against Russian aggression. “It’s Ukrainians who are holding the European front,” he emphasized, noting independent Poland and free Baltic states stand behind Ukrainian troops.
The president further remarked: “Even one Viktor can think about how to grow his belly, not how to grow his army to stop Russian tanks from returning to the streets of Budapest,” referencing the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary.
Orban did not directly address Zelensky’s comments on social media but suggested the remarks would clarify Ukraine’s European integration ambitions. “This debate is not about me and it is not about you. It is about the future of Hungary, Ukraine, and Europe,” he stated.
