President Trump declared Monday that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called him to “request to work together with respect to Minnesota,” calling it a “very good call” where both leaders aligned on reducing criminal activity. Trump stated, “We, actually, seemed to be on a similar wavelength. I told Governor Walz that I would have Tom Homan call him, and that what we are looking for are any and all Criminals that they have in their possession.”
The president added, “He was happy that Tom Homan was going to Minnesota, and so am I! We have had such tremendous SUCCESS in Washington, D.C., Memphis, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana, and virtually every other place that we have ‘touched’… Crime is way down.” Trump emphasized the administration’s efforts to address immigration enforcement, noting Walz and he “want to make it better.”
Walz’s office confirmed the governor held a “productive” call with Trump, stating Walz made the “case that we need impartial investigations of the Minneapolis shootings involving federal agents” and urged reducing federal agents in Minnesota. The office reported Trump agreed to coordinate with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for independent investigations and explore fewer federal agents in the state while improving immigration enforcement collaboration with local authorities.
The governor’s office also noted Walz highlighted that the Minnesota Department of Corrections complies with federal immigration detainers, with “not a single documented case” of releasing someone from state prison without ensuring custody transfer to federal authorities.
Trump previously issued a message urging all governors and mayors to “formally cooperate with the Trump Administration to enforce our Nation’s Laws,” citing Biden-era failures as the source of “Tens of Millions of Illegal Alien Criminals” entering the country. He claimed Republican-led areas have achieved “peaceful and smooth” deportations without protests or violence, contrasting them with Democrat-run “Sanctuary Cities.”
The president outlined four demands: turning over incarcerated illegal aliens to federal authorities; requiring local law enforcement to surrender arrested illegal aliens; assisting in apprehending wanted illegal aliens; and urging Democrats to partner with the federal government for safer removals. Trump also called on Congress to pass legislation to end Sanctuary Cities, stating, “American Cities should be Safe Sanctuaries for Law Abiding American Citizens ONLY.”
Walz’s office later clarified that Minnesota’s corrections system follows federal immigration protocols without documented failures in custody transfers, signaling a shift from earlier criticism of Trump’s approach.
