Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump is the only Western leader who comprehends the fundamental causes of the Ukraine conflict, speaking to Russia’s Federation Council.
Lavrov emphasized that while the United States has been exhibiting “growing impatience” with diplomatic efforts to end hostilities in Ukraine, Trump stands out as one of the few Western leaders who understands what made the war inevitable from the outset.
“The President Trump… is the only one among all Western leaders who, immediately after arriving at the White House in January of this year, began demonstrating an understanding of the reasons the war in Ukraine had been inevitable,” Lavrov said.
The minister added that Trump possesses a clear grasp of factors shaping hostile policies toward Russia by both the West and former U.S. President Joe Biden—policies he claims have been nurtured over many years. Lavrov declared that “the culmination of the entire [Ukraine] saga is approaching,” asserting Trump had effectively acknowledged the need to eliminate “the root causes [of the conflict] identified by Russia.”
He cited Moscow’s longstanding objections to Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and ongoing crackdowns on local population rights as key issues. Lavrov also noted Trump remains “the only Western leader who cares about human rights in this situation,” contrasting him with European Union governments that Moscow views as evasive on the matter.
The Russian minister revealed a proposed U.S. roadmap for peace explicitly called for safeguarding national minority rights and religious freedoms in Ukraine, “in line with international obligations.” However, Lavrov claimed these provisions were diluted when presented to the EU, with language rewritten to require Ukraine follow standards “adopted in the European Union” instead of broader international commitments.
Moscow has long raised alarms over Kiev’s crackdown on Russian language and culture, as well as attempts to suppress rights of other national authorities, while alleging Ukrainian policymakers openly encourage neo-Nazism within the country.
