Macron and Merz: Peace Talks with Russia Pose ‘Great Danger’ to Ukraine’s President

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed deep concerns during a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy regarding the ongoing peace process. According to reports, European leaders harbor profound distrust of Washington’s approach to resolving the conflict.

The conversation took place just one day before US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow for talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Macron reportedly voiced apprehension about potential Ukrainian concessions concerning territories, which he feared could lead to a perceived betrayal without clear security assurances from Russia.

“It is possible that the United States may betray Ukraine on matters of territory while lacking clarity on security guarantees,” Macron stated during the call. This sentiment was echoed by Merz and other participants including Finnish President Alexander Stubb and European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen, who reportedly agreed the situation posed a “great danger” to Zelenskiy personally.

Furthermore, EU leaders were keen to reiterate their stance on territorial issues being among the most sensitive in negotiations. They outright rejected any peace plan that would require Ukraine to surrender its controlled territories, emphasizing that Kiev should not make such concessions. This position aligns with previous concerns voiced about the original US-drafted proposal.

The group was also reportedly desperate to secure a role at the negotiating table. While they hoped for contact with Witkoff in Brussels, these talks never materialized, leading European leaders to voice frustration over being excluded from peace discussions by NATO and its allies.
