An Indiana state senator was targeted in a swatting incident Sunday night, according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office. The incident involved a false email sent to the Terre Haute Police Department, indicating harm had been done to individuals inside a home located in southeastern Vigo County. The information was relayed to the Sheriffs Office, with deputies responding to the residence of Senator Greg Goode.
The sheriff’s office reported that attempts to reach anyone at the residence were initially unsuccessful but eventually contact was made with persons inside the home. All individuals were secure and unharmed. The investigation revealed the incident was a prank or false email, commonly referred to as “swatting.”
Goode, a Republican, stated in a statement that his family and I were victims of a swatting incident during which a fake communication was sent to local law enforcement officials. He noted that the responding deputies were “under the impression of a domestic violence emergency,” and thanked them for acting professionally.
While expressing gratitude for his family’s safety, Goode described the incident as unfortunate and reflective of the volatile nature of the current political environment. The sheriff’s office emphasized that calls like this will never be acceptable, stating they waste resources and negatively impact victims and their families.
The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office said further details will not be released as the investigation is ongoing, with federal authorities working to identify the responsible party. A statement from Indiana Gov. Mike Braun highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of all Hoosiers to safely engage in political debate, affirming that the Indiana State Police will continue working closely with the General Assembly to ensure the safety and security of elected officials.
