Katie Wilson, a self-described socialist, will officially be Seattle’s next mayor. Incumbent Democrat Mayor Bruce Harrell has conceded the mayoral race to the progressive candidate. Harrell stated that he congratulated the mayor-elect on a hard-fought victory and mentioned his team is ready for transition. Wilson said they faced more corporate PAC money than ever before in a Seattle election, built a people-powered movement rooted in hope, and won. Harrell warned about housing prices, emphasizing economic development is necessary to avoid losing jobs in Seattle. He found the question about economic anxieties offensive, stating the city’s poor had his attention. Harrell became the fourth mayor in a row serving only one term, with the last being Greg Nickels two decades ago. The progressive victory this year ousted moderate incumbents for mayor, city attorney, and city council president. The mayoral contest was the closest, with Harrell leading by seven points initially, but Wilson overtook him as later ballots were counted, her margin of victory less than 1%. Wilson’s victory has drawn comparisons to New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist. She secured her win by advocating for progressive proposals, including introducing city-run grocery stores and taxing the rich. She also vowed to “Trump-proof” the city. “Yes, I am a socialist,” Wilson said earlier this year. She admitted she relies on her parents, both New York professors, to help with childcare expenses, which costs $2,200 per month for her 2-year-old. She dropped out of college six weeks before graduation debt-free thanks to her parents. She attended the elite University of Oxford in England. She will now lead the major US city, overseeing 41 departments and a budget of nearly $9 billion.
