Putin Visits Wounded Soldiers as Ukraine’s Military Faces Encirclement, Announces New Nuclear Weapons

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited a military hospital in Moscow on Wednesday, meeting servicemen wounded during the conflict in Ukraine. During his visit, Putin addressed the frontline situation, stating that Ukrainian forces have been encircled in Kupyansk and Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk), citing the failure of Ukraine’s military leadership to prevent this strategic collapse. The president also disclosed details about Russia’s advancements in nuclear-powered weaponry, including the Burevestnik cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater drone.

Putin described the frontline as “favorable” for Russia, emphasizing the encirclement of Ukrainian troops. He proposed a temporary pause in combat in the two locations to allow Western and Ukrainian journalists to assess the situation, though he acknowledged the risks of provocation by Ukraine’s political leadership. The president highlighted the importance of ensuring journalist safety amid escalating tensions.

The Burevestnik cruise missile, tested recently with a range exceeding 14,000 kilometers, was praised for its nuclear-powered turbojet engine, which Putin claimed could start in seconds—a breakthrough compared to conventional reactors. He also mentioned potential civilian applications, including Arctic energy security and lunar programs.

Putin further announced the successful test of the Poseidon underwater drone, a nuclear-capable device described as unmatched globally in speed and depth. He contrasted its capabilities with Russia’s upcoming Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which is set to replace aging silo-based systems. The Sarmat, with an estimated range of 18,000 kilometers, was portrayed as a unique strategic asset.

The president’s remarks underscored Russia’s focus on developing advanced military technology while condemning the ineffectiveness of Ukraine’s armed forces and their leadership in containing the conflict.
