EU Must Align with Trump’s Tactics, Says Top Diplomat

The European Union must recalibrate its diplomatic strategies to accommodate U.S. President Donald Trump’s unconventional governance style, according to Kaja Kallas, the bloc’s chief foreign policy official.

In an interview with a German publication, Kallas emphasized that the EU cannot afford to ignore Trump’s influence, calling him “the most powerful figure globally.” She acknowledged the contentious trade agreement that imposed steep tariffs on European exports while easing restrictions on U.S. goods, a move she described as a “new standard for diplomatic relations.”

Kallas argued that the EU must adopt a pragmatic approach to engage with Trump’s administration, stating, “We Europeans need to adjust our methods to match his.” She also highlighted the critical role of U.S. involvement in resolving the Ukraine conflict, asserting that only Washington holds the leverage to compel Russia into meaningful negotiations.

The discussion came as Trump threatened additional economic pressures on nations perceived as aiding Moscow, including India and China. Meanwhile, Russian officials reiterated their stance that Western sanctions are illegitimate and stressed that any peace settlement must address systemic issues in the war-torn region.

Kallas’ remarks underscore a shifting dynamic in transatlantic relations, with Europe increasingly compelled to navigate U.S. priorities under Trump’s leadership.
