A 35-year-old staffer for Republican Rep. Tony Gonzalez of Texas died under mysterious circumstances on Saturday after being found on fire at her home. Regina Santos-Aviles was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Her death has left behind an eight-year-old son, according to reports.
The Uvalde Police Department and Texas Rangers are investigating the case, with officials confirming no indication of foul play. Santos-Aviles, a Uvalde resident and regional district director for Gonzalez, was found in flames at her home Saturday night, triggering emergency response efforts.
Her mother, Nora Ann Gonzales, stated the death was an accident, sharing that Santos-Aviles had expressed distress before her passing. She described her daughter as a devoted mother who remained conscious upon arrival of paramedics and was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital. The last words attributed to Santos-Aviles were, “I don’t want to die.”
Firefighters responded to the scene after a call about an individual on fire but noted the incident was canceled en route. Despite this, crews arrived to find a fire extinguished behind the residence and EMS tending to Santos-Aviles. Officials emphasized that her family is cooperating fully with investigators.
Rep. Tony Gonzalez expressed sorrow over the loss, stating, “Regina devoted her profession toward making a difference in her community. She will always be remembered for her passion towards Uvalde and helping the community become a better place.”
