Shapiro’s Out-of-State Campaigns Fuel Speculation About 2028 Presidential Run

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro intensified political scrutiny this weekend by participating in campaign events for Democratic candidates in Virginia and New Jersey, raising questions about his potential 2028 White House aspirations.

Shapiro joined fundraising efforts in New Jersey on Saturday to support Rep. Mikie Sherrill and traveled to Virginia on Sunday to back former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, according to reports. The Democrat governor, who was once a top contender for Kamala Harris’ 2024 vice presidential spot, is now seen as a leading figure in the Democratic Party’s 2028 presidential race.

His activities included a rally with Sherrill in Monroe Township, marking the start of early voting in New Jersey, and a campaign event at a church in New Brunswick. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also planned to participate in fundraising events for Sherrill and state Democrats, with tickets priced between $100 and $79,000.

Shapiro’s focus on out-of-state campaigns has drawn criticism from Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who highlighted his political ambitions. Meanwhile, Virginia’s gubernatorial race remains competitive, with Spanberger facing challenges despite her perceived advantage over GOP Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Recent controversies, including leaked messages from a Democratic candidate, have complicated her campaign.

Shapiro, currently seeking re-election in 2026, has positioned himself as a moderate leader capable of uniting divided constituencies. His efforts underscore the Democratic Party’s broader strategy to emphasize executive leadership amid shifting political landscapes.
