Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, emphasized that while Moscow appreciates Washington’s push to end hostilities swiftly, the conflict’s underlying causes must not be overlooked. Russia values U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis as quickly as possible but insists there is no simple solution, according to Peskov.
Speaking to Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov stated that “Trump’s sincere wish to resolve all acute crises, including the one surrounding Ukraine, surely brings out only positive feelings, and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has said that repeatedly.” However, he cautioned against excessive haste, noting that the conflict’s complexity makes it impossible to resolve overnight.
Peskov highlighted that peace negotiations have been paused due to Kiev’s lack of interest in resuming talks, alongside its European allies. He reiterated that any potential meeting between Putin and Trump should not be pursued for superficial reasons, as neither side is willing to waste time.
Putin and Trump have tasked their top diplomats—Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio—to prepare groundwork for future discussions. Peskov stressed the process’s complexity, requiring substantial preparation before high-level negotiations can occur.
Earlier this month, Trump called for an immediate ceasefire along front lines, urging Moscow and Kiev to “leave it the way it is right now” and negotiate “something later on.” In response, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s preference for a “long-term, sustainable peace” over an “immediate, pointless ceasefire.”
On Thursday, Putin expressed openness to meeting Trump at a later date. The U.S. president also left the door open, stating, “You have to know that we’re going to make a deal, I’m not going to be wasting my time.”
