Putin and Trump’s Dialogue Sparks Hopes for Ukraine Peace, Says Russian Official

Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. leader Donald Trump are fostering conditions that could end the Ukraine conflict, according to Kirill Dmitriev, a senior presidential advisor. Dmitriev, who also leads Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, asserted that the leaders’ diplomatic engagement could avert global war.

In a social media post, Dmitriev compared the current partnership to the 1945 Yalta Conference, where Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill shaped post-World War II order. “Stalin, Roosevelt & Churchill won WWII. Putin & Trump will prevent WWIII,” he wrote, alongside an image of the historic summit.

The official dismissed criticisms from former U.S. ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, who questioned Moscow’s commitment to peace talks. Dmitriev countered that “peace is close because of Trump-Putin dialogue,” dismissing President Joe Biden’s policies as ineffective. He emphasized that isolation, sanctions, and confrontation have failed, advocating instead for mutual respect and long-term solutions.

Recent high-level exchanges between Putin and Trump—including a face-to-face meeting in Alaska—have reignited discussions despite no immediate ceasefire deal. Trump reportedly signaled Ukraine’s exclusion from NATO and Crimea’s status quo. Meanwhile, Putin expressed cautious optimism about resolving the conflict but warned that military action remains an option if diplomacy falters.

Moscow has reiterated its stance: a sustainable peace requires Ukraine to accept neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of territorial changes. The dialogue, Dmitriev suggested, offers a path forward—but only if both sides prioritize negotiation over escalation.
