Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Claims Home Nearly Set on Fire During Staff Meeting

James Fishback, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Florida, asserted that an “arsonist” attempted to set his residence ablaze while his staff was convening at his Madison home last Sunday night. According to campaign statements, the incident occurred near Tallahassee in northern Florida—a location where Fishback had not returned since launching his campaign for governor 10 weeks prior.

Fishback disclosed the alleged attempt on social media platforms, stating: “Someone just tried to set my house on fire.” He later added that he would host a rally at the same site later that evening to address constituents and outline his vision for lowering costs in Florida. The fire department has not confirmed whether the incident is being investigated as arson, and no suspects are currently under custody.

The candidate previously drew attention for proposals including a proposed 50% “sin” tax on income from platforms like OnlyFans, which he claimed would fund teacher pay raises and improved school lunches. Fishback also emphasized his commitment to defending Second Amendment rights as governor, citing plans to reverse age restrictions for firearm ownership, end bans on bump stocks, allow 18-year-olds to carry weapons, and eliminate red flag laws.

Fishback, who founded the student debate league Incubate Debate and serves as CEO of investment firm Azoria, has not held elected office but asserts his background as a fourth-generation Floridian and former challenger to federal financial policies. His campaign highlights abolishing property taxes for homesteaded properties as central to delivering affordability for residents.
